Since the first stones were laid back in 1853, the Builders Arms Hotel has borne witness to many of the key historical events of the last century and a half. In short, the pub has seen it all and remains a landmark - a constant presence in our community. It's a meeting place for colleagues, somewhere to celebrate with family and friends, a spot to watch the footy, a sanctuary at the end of the day or week...
It's all things to all people.

Stories from Fitzroy’s indigenous community members in collaboration with Yalinguth

“Victoria was a congregation of people who wanted change. And Fitzroy was a place where we felt comfortable.

We could go down the local pub, they would just say, well you can use this space for your meeting and whatever. Going back in the early days, this is where it all happened for Aboriginal people.”

AUNTY GEORGINA LOVETT WILLIAMS

“The great thing about the communities both in Redfern and Fitzroy, at that time (in the 1970s) was this universal spirit.

There was a pan-Aboriginal spirit. All these different mobs came from different places but in places like The Builders and the Big E (in Redfern), everyone mingled and felt we were one. We were united.”
