Sir Doug Nicholls Walk with Yalinguth

To mark the kick-off of the AFL’s Sir Doug Nicholls Round and Reconciliation Week, we hosted local storytellers, Yalinguth, for a special event. For the last few years we have partnered with Yalinguth, a local organisation that shares Aboriginal and Torres Strait perspectives through audio-guided story walk experiences in Ngár-go/Fitzroy.

On the evening, Yalinguth guided guests on a walking tour through Fitzroy to Builders Arms Hotel, all led by Jason Tamiru, the grandson of Sir Doug Nicholls himself.

As Jason says, Nicholls was a “champion in everything” including running, boxing and football, as well as the Governor of South Australia. Inspired by Sir Doug’s love for sport and community, Jason story walked from Atherton Gardens down Gertrude Street, all while speaking on community, the Indigenous rights movement, footy and the history of the Fitzroy stars.

We heard about a legendary visit with Muhammed Ali and saw where Sir Doug started a church for his community, before finishing in the Bowery Room at Builders Arms Hotel for a short film about Sir Doug and many more yarns with his nephew, Uncle Bobby Nicholls.

It was a wonderful way to kick off the Indigenous Round, ahead of Dreamtime at the ‘G.
